da Vinci® Surgeries for Gynecologic Conditions

Understand your gynecologic surgery options with the caring team at Mesbah OB/GYN in Garden City, NY. If medications or lifestyle changes are not easing your symptoms, your doctor may discuss minimally invasive surgery, including laparoscopic and robotic-assisted options using da Vinci® technology.

Gynecologic conditions

Gynecology focuses on the internal female reproductive system, including the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, and vagina. When something is wrong in this system, it can affect your comfort, daily routine, and overall health. Common gynecologic conditions include severe pelvic pain, endometriosis, fibroids, abnormal bleeding, pelvic organ prolapse, and cancer. Many patients tell us they want clear answers and a treatment plan that fits their symptoms and goals.

Types of surgery

In the past, surgeons often needed large incisions in the skin and muscle to reach the area of concern. That is called open surgery. Today, many gynecologic procedures can be performed with minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery or robotic-assisted surgery, possibly with da Vinci® technology.

Both minimally invasive approaches use one or a few small incisions so the surgeon can place surgical instruments and a camera. In laparoscopic surgery, the surgeon uses long-handled instruments while watching magnified images from the laparoscope on a video screen.

What is a da Vinci surgical system?

da Vinci surgical systems have three main parts: the surgeon console, the patient-side cart, and the vision cart.

Surgeon console

The surgeon console is where your surgeon sits during the procedure. It provides a clear 3DHD view of the anatomy and controls the instruments with precise hand movements. The tiny instruments are wristed, which means they can move in ways that mimic a human hand, but with an even wider range of motion.

Patient cart

The patient-side cart is placed near the patient on the operating table. It holds the instruments used during surgery and responds in real time to the surgeon’s hand movements at the console.

Vision cart

The vision cart helps the system communicate and gives the care team a screen to view the procedure as it happens.

It is important to remember that Intuitive does not provide medical advice. After discussing all options with your doctor, only you and your doctor can decide whether surgery with da Vinci technology is appropriate for your situation. You should always ask your surgeon about training, experience, and patient outcomes.

Robotic-assisted gynecologic procedures

Talk with your doctor if you have questions about these procedures or whether a minimally invasive approach may be right for you.
