When is uterine bleeding abnormal?

Abnormal bleeding is when you bleed between your periods or have heavy or longer-than-normal periods. Normally, you can expect menstrual bleeding every 21-35 days,  with bleeding that lasts up to seven days.

If you experience any of the following, then you have abnormal bleeding:

  • Bleeding in between your periods
  • Bleeding after sex
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Irregular periods
  • No menstrual bleeding for three or more months
  • Bleeding after menopause

A menstrual cycle that’s shorter than 21 days or longer than 35 days is also considered abnormal.

What are some common causes of abnormal bleeding?

Women may experience abnormal bleeding at any life stage. It’s not unusual to have abnormal bleeding when you first start your period and in the months or years leading up to menopause.

However, your unusual uterine bleeding may also be a sign of an underlying gynecological condition such as endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or fibroids.

This type of bleeding may also occur during an ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage. Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) may also cause abnormal bleeding.

What types of tests do I need to diagnose abnormal bleeding?

Mesbah OB/GYN is a state-of-the-art practice that offers many on-site testing services. The team first conducts a thorough history and physical before recommending any specific diagnostic tests.

The types of tests they may use to diagnose your abnormal bleeding include:

  • Blood test
  • Pap smear
  • Ultrasound
  • Hysteroscopy
  • Colposcopy
  • MRI
  • CT scan
  • STD testing

The type of testing you need depends on the severity and frequency of your unusual bleeding and the suspected cause.

What are my treatment options for abnormal bleeding?

Treatment options for your abnormal bleeding depend on the underlying cause, the severity of the bleeding, and your current or future pregnancy plans.

Initially, the team may recommend medications to control your bleeding, such as hormonal birth control, hormonal therapy (menopause and perimenopause), or tranexamic acid.

If medications fail to improve your abnormal bleeding, the team may recommend:

Endometrial ablation

Minimally invasive surgery

The team may perform minimally invasive surgery for fibroids to remove the benign tumor.
