What is endometrial ablation?

Endometrial ablation is a treatment that helps women who suffer from heavy, painful periods.

Before considering endometrial ablation, your provider at Mesbah OB/GYN can offer less invasive treatments like medication for problem periods. However, some women continue to have pain and excessive blood flow.

If you’re one of them, endometrial ablation could be the answer. The treatment destroys the endometrium lining your uterus, which should ease your symptoms significantly.

Is endometrial ablation the right choice for me?

Mesbah OB/GYN recommends that you don’t conceive after endometrial ablation; therefore, the procedure is only suitable for women who don’t wish to have any more children. To ensure you don’t become pregnant following endometrial ablation, it’s important to use birth control methods until after menopause.

Before recommending endometrial ablation, your provider at Mesbah OB/GYN looks for any treatable cause of your abnormal uterine bleeding.

They might do an ultrasound scan or sonohysterogram — a special ultrasound you have after your provider fills your uterus with saline (salt water). A sonohysterogram is particularly useful for identifying problems in the uterus and endometrium.

Another option is a hysteroscopy, where your provider inserts a tiny camera on a flexible tube into your uterus. These procedures can identify causes for your problem periods like uterine fibroids, polyps, and precancerous or cancerous cells.

How does endometrial ablation work?

Several methods for performing endometrial ablation are available, including heat energy and cryotherapy (cold). Mesbah OB/GYN uses NovaSure, which delivers radiofrequency energy to the endometrium.

This single, five-minute procedure significantly reduces or stops menstrual bleeding for almost 80% of patients. NovaSure is a simple treatment your provider performs in-office.

What happens when I have endometrial ablation?

NovaSure endometrial ablation consists of four stages. First, your provider inserts a slender wand into your vagina and opens your cervix a little.

The wand has a triangular mesh device on its end that goes into your uterus. The mesh expands to fit the size and shape of your uterus. Then, your provider delivers precisely measured radiofrequency energy through the mesh.

After about 90 seconds, the lining of your uterus comes away. Your provider pulls the mesh device back into the wand and removes everything from your uterus.
