What is STD testing?

STD testing includes various diagnostic tests that detect or rule out sexually transmitted diseases. You can contract STDs from an infected partner after having oral, anal, or vaginal sexual intercourse. Parasites, bacteria, or viruses cause STDs.

What are common STDs?

STD testing at Mesbah OB/GYN can detect or rule out some of the following common STDs:

  • Herpes
  • Gonorrhea
  • Chlamydia
  • Trichomoniasis
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Pubic lice
  • Hepatitis
  • Syphilis

It’s possible to have more than one type of STD at once or contract an STD again after being treated for it.

What are the symptoms of STDs?

Not all STDs cause symptoms, at least not immediately. If you have an STD, you might experience:

  • Burning urination
  • Painful urination
  • Genital or anal sores or bumps
  • Unusual or smelly vaginal discharge
  • Pelvic pain
  • Pain during sex
  • Unusual vaginal bleeding
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Rash
  • Fever

Complications that may develop because of untreated STDs include cervical cancer, other cancers, infertility, gynecological problems, pregnancy complications, and more.

What does STD testing consist of?

To find out if you have an STD, the experts at Mesbah OB/GYN discuss your symptoms, medical history, sexual history, and lifestyle with you.

They check your vital signs and complete a physical exam, including a pelvic exam and a Pap test if needed. To do so, your provider takes a sample of cells from your cervix and submits it to a lab for analysis.

The Mesbah OB/GYN team could also collect blood, urine, or fluid samples from open genital sores.

What happens if I have an STD?

Some STDs are curable, while you can manage others using medications. Antibiotics and antiviral medications are common treatments for STDs, depending on the type you have. You must notify sexual partners if you have an infection and abstain from sex until you complete treatment. Your partner must also undergo STD testing and treatment if necessary.

If you have an STD that isn’t curable, taking medications as directed by your specialist can reduce the risk of spreading the infection to sexual partners.

If you have cervical cancer because of HPV, you may need minor surgery to remove affected tissues. The earlier you get tested and treated for cervical cancer, the better your outcome.
